DAKINE Hudson Messinger Bag - 1200cu in Northwest , One Size Review

love this bag, wish it had a few more zipper pockets, only has one, and 3-4 pen holders and then one, larger open pouch, but i have my macbook pro, nook tablet, nintendo ds, 5games, zune hd, hand sanitizer, plethora of power cords, medications, etc in it and 1-2 magazines and still have plenty of room, also the length of the strap is fairly long, which is nice, easier to shorten then make longer. the shoulder pad is really soft and comfortable too.

Outdoor Research Men's Short Ferrosi Pants (Pewter, 32) Review

My husband LOVES these pants! They're flexible, comfortable, quick-drying and perfect for his outdoor sports. HOWEVER, these pants are sized large. I bought him a 34-short which should have fit, but they were huge and too long. So I exchanged them for a 32-short which fit just right and were the right length.

Fusion 2.00-Inch Rigger's Belt with Nylon Loop and Raptor-Alum Buckle, Foil Green, Large Review

I got this belt to run under my condor molle belt (battle belt type rig). My current web belt with a plastic buckle wasn't trustworthy and was coming unbuckled partially, not a good thing right? So I saw this product, which is 2" (awesome) with a solid metallic buckle. Everything is as a suspected. When buckling the belt, you get a good click into place, and unbuckling requires that both tabs be pushed on top and bottom simultaneously, so I don't see accidental unbuckling happening easily. The belt is fabric, like a riggers belt, but it is very tough, very thick, and fairly rigid. It isn't as rigid as a web belt, but it's more rigid than a 5.11 riggers belt. For a battle belt, it is just perfect being 2 inches wide!

I will say this - it has a fabric loop suitable for a carabiner or fifi hook (or both), which shouldn't be used as a primary harness for climbing, but can and is usually used for fifi hooks, etc to tie off on ladders etc... although it's solid, I don't have the same confidence that I would have with a velcro/buckle riggers belt. The confidence is good, but I just haven't used this enough to be 100% confident. No stars off though, everything I've experienced with this belt so far has led me to believe it's rock solid.

On sizing:
This is the biggest thing you need to know. So many reviews out there, but no one really tells you what their size is, and how the belt fits in relation to that.

I have a 36" waist. I ordered the Large, which is 38-43" according to manufacturer. The sizing is right on. At its tightest point, the belt sags loose, about 2" loose to be exact. With that said, the tightest point is with the velcro belt wrapped around the buckle and then well on it's way to my back, maybe just past the 90 degree point (or 9 o'clock)... so if you have belt loops etc, it would be fairly painful to have so much spare belt. It can be cut and then burned though (some may not want to do this though, understandable), but not a big deal.

But since I am running this on a molle battle belt, I needed a larger size, so this will go around my pants and another riggers belt underneath. So with all of that, I am running about a 40" waist... so this belt was pretty well suited for me. Another reviewer said "go larger" in his review, but if you read it, he's running a battle belt as well, so take that review in context.

Any questions, leave comments and I'll try to help you since this is a fairly expensive belt. In my opinion, this is worth it and I don't go cheap on stuff that could save my life (save my life by not breaking when stuff breaks bad!!)

Stay safe.

Brooks Men's Vapor Dry 2 Tight,Black,Medium Review

If you don't have thick endomorphic legs, many running tights will ride up way above your ankles. These ones don't.

I've found them good for colder weather than the rated 40 degrees. 29 degrees was no problem.

Make sure to wash or rinse them often though, the material is pretty thick and sweat will accumulate and start to stink.

OGIO Hip Hop Messenger Bag (Royal) Review

Decent to Very Good. Quality of the canvas, and arrangement/volume of storage compartments are excellent. I ride a motorcycle, so need a sturdy, waterproof bag. Haven't moved into the rainy season here in Seattle, we'll see. I only have 2 real gripes with the bag:
1- I wish it had a 3rd point of contact from the bottom righ hand side (when worn across shoulder) connecting up to the shoulder stap for a more positive control of the bag. (I had a "Buell" bag with this feature that was stolen and have yet to find an equivilent).
2- The left hand (when worn) strap loop (long rectangular plastic) keeps twisting so that instead of being flat with the sewn-in strap and the adjustable shoulder strap nice and smooth, it turns so the straps are scruntched up, and the strap lengthens just a bit.

With that said, I still think this is a pretty good product, one of the best out there, I just have very high standards for what I want in a long distance motorcycle messenger bag (I don't want to get a backpack, or use my saddle bags, because when I get to work this becomes my briefcase, so I want it to maintain a bit of a professional look)

I hope this helps somebody.

SOG Assisted Technology Increases Speed, Safety, and Usability
When you go to unfold the S67-N's blades, SOG's proprietary S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over. High-tension coil springs propel the blades open, so you can easily access the S67-N's blades with just one hand.

Additionally, S.A.T. multi-tools offer security and peace of mind with their locking mechanisms that are stronger, more reliable, and easier to access than other multi-tools'. When not in use, the blades lock closed using a patent-pending side release, and while in use, other tool components can lock open individually.

Combining Compound Leverage and PowerLock Technology for Safe, Easy Use
Driven by an exclusive interlocking gear system, SOG's patented Compound Leverage technology is a legend in folding tools. With the proprietary technology's increased leverage, SOG pliers generate twice the power of their conventional counterparts, minimizing the amount of hand pressure that is required to get the most torque out of the tool. And using SOG's PowerLock technology, the S67-N features removable, pivoting handle covers that improve hand comfort and allow for additional pressure on tough jobs.

SOG is the only company to apply Compound Leverage technology to EOD-specific (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) multi-tools. This technology makes the S67-N an ideal tool for crimping blasting caps and demolition cord with minimal hand pressure. The position of the crimper device within the handle is an EOD-specific feature unique to SOG. This design serves to minimize collateral damage to the crimper and allows you to have uninterrupted use of the plying surface (unlike other brands' tools). Additionally, the crimper produces non-flaring, high pull-out strength crimps that meet government fuse well specifications.

The S67-N is GSA approved.

Heavy-Duty Components Meet Military-Grade Needs
With over a dozen components, from pliers to knives, and industrial-grade, quality design, the S67-N includes everything a professional soldier or weekend warrior needs.

Ergonomic, Lightweight Design Ensures Comfortable Use
Flip open the tool and experience easy one-handed use of heavy-duty pliers and large wire cutters. Smooth handle surfaces promote comfort on even the toughest jobs and gear covers and hex bolts provide easy access to the tools. And at just 9.3 ounces, this multi-tool is lightweight and easy to carry. A nylon pouch with belt loop is included for convenient portability.

This multi-tool is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

About SOG: Strong, Innovative Specialty Tools

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools S67-N Power Assist EOD Polished Multi-Tool Review

This is a well made multi-tool for a good price and it is the closest thing SOG offers to a marine multitool on the general consumer market. If the tools suit your needs, then it is certainly a four-star tool, maybe five (although see my comments in the "General SOG Quality" section below). For sailing/marine applications, however, the tool options are not ideal. SOG makes another (similar) multi-tool much better suited for sailing use, but it is only offered through a particular distributor.

S67-N TOOLS:
There are two knife blades accessible from the exterior: one serrated and one straight edge blade, both of which lock in place and have thumb studs and power assist technology for easy deployment. This is a nice feature, but I thought older models without power assist were also easy to open one-handed. The power assist makes it a little faster and more effortless, but aside from the "cool" factor, the power assist is not a sufficient reason to upgrade if you have an older model.

To access the other tools, you must open the pliers and lift the built-in cover. There, you'll find a file, a C-4 punch/glass breaker, can opener, and two flat screw drivers. The rest of the tool features are built into the body of the tool. They include the pliers/wire cutters, crimper, and measuring ruler.

SOG BEST FEATURES:
Hands down the best feature of the SOG multi-tools over other brands is the compound pliers. It's amazing how easily you can grip or cut wire. Watch the SOG video review and you will see how easily the wire cutters can slice into a penny with very little grip pressure. Nice! Also, without a doubt these pliers are every bit as functional as a dedicated pair of needlenose pliers/cutters--no compromises!

Another wonderful feature is the locking blades and accessories. Since a multi-tool is already a compromise over an array of purpose-built tools, the last thing you want is the added complication of accessory blades that keep folding shut on you while you try to use them. I applaud SOG for building locks not only into the main blades, but also into the smaller accessories.

A third excellent feature is that SOG sells individual multi-tool components (blades, scissors, screwdrivers, wire strippers, etc.) through their website, so if you want to swap one tool out for another that suits your needs better, that may be possible (assuming they're roughly comparable in size... obviously, you have to make sure whatever you swap in won't interfere with the folding pliers head.)

S67-N's SHORTCOMINGS FOR SAILING/MARINE APPLICATIONS:
I realize SOG doesn't bill this as a "marine" model, but if you're looking for a multi-tool for sailing (as I was), you'll notice that a proper marlinspike for ropes and knots is conspicuously missing. In a pinch, you could use the C-4 punch for that purpose (SOG mentions this use on their website), but it won't work as well as a long and smoothly tapered marlinspike. Also, since the C-4 punch is on the interior, you'll need to open the tool to access it (however, once deployed, you can close the tool again; you don't have to leave the pliers exposed while using it).

Another obvious and more surprising oversight is the lack of a Phillips head screwdriver, which is useful not only aboard a boat but ashore as well. I suppose the C-4 spike takes up too much room to cram in a Phillips head as well, but I see this as a significant drawback. I have several waterproof electronic items, including a hand-held VHF radio and a GPS/Depthfinder, that use a Phillips head screw to maintain the watertight integrity of their battery or SD-card compartments. The SOG S66 model has a Phillips head, but you lose the C-4 punch, which means that you won't even have a makeshift marlinspike, let alone a proper one. The SOG S69 model has more tools, including a v-cutter and the C-4 punch, but you lose the outside accessible blade and the more boat-friendly sheepsfoot blade design.

Lastly, there are no wrenches (not on the S66 or S69 either). You'll have to rely on the pliers if you need to tighten/loosen any hex heads (such as on a typical outboard motor or some masthead fittings). In my experience, that's a sure recipe for marred or rounded off hex heads.

A BETTER SOG TOOL FOR SAILING
These shortcomings really stand out because I was spoiled by a previous SOG multi-tool called the "Performance Sailing Multi-Tool." It had a proper locking marlinspike as one of the two main blades (accessible from the exterior). The other main blade was a half-serrated/half-straight sheepfoot blade that was very functional (both for quickly sawing free of a tangled line or cleanly slicing the ends of a rope). On the interior, in place of the not-so-useful C-4 punch, it had three flat head screwdrivers, one Phillips head (#1), and three wrenches (#8, #10, and 1/4"). It also had a bottle opener, can opener and file. The latter had a slot that also served as a shackle key/wrench, which is very handy if you need to attach/detach the rode from the anchor, or if a halyard shackle jams for some reason. Also, instead of hex head bolts to hold the multi-tool together, it had allen screws with rounded edges that felt a little smoother on the palm in some grip positions (not a huge difference, though).

I didn't realize this excellent sailing-specific model (which isn't listed on SOG's website) is only available through a particular marine retailer with the initials W.M., which may or may not be located to the West of your Marina. I went there today and they still carry the SOG Performance Sailing Multi-Tool, so I bought a new one for fifty bucks (on sale). Although it lacks the upgrade of power assist technology, it is still a much better tool for sailing use than the S67 or any other SOG model. I don't understand why SOG doesn't upgrade it further and offer it as a standard part of their line-up. I bet they would sell very well.

GENERAL SOG QUALITY
There is plenty to like about SOG multi-tools. Before I owned one, I had concerns about their quality because I read negative reviews that claimed they were vastly inferior to Leatherman's equivalent models. However, I can attest that the SOG S67-N and the SOG Performance Sailing Multi-Tool are both very well made and comparable in quality to Leatherman's second-tier all-stainless multi-tools, such as the very popular Wave. (Leatherman's most expensive multi-tools like the Surge and SuperTool could be considered superior because they use better steel for the cutting tools, but they also cost a lot more and will be overkill for most people's needs).

One place SOG lags slightly behind Leatherman in quality is in the solidness of the deployed tools. There is a tiny amount of play in the main blades and each of the accessories--about 1/32" to 1/16" of wiggle in line with each tool. (Fortunately, there is no wiggle side to side, which would be greater cause for concern.) I've seen Leatherman models that had zero wiggle when the tools were deployed. That said, the SOG's wiggle is perfectly acceptable and it does not seem to worsen with wear/usage. I also prefer the tool options of the SOG Performance Sailing Multi-Tool over any Leatherman model. If I couldn't have found another SOG sailing tool at W.M. today, the (noticeably more expensive) Leatherman Wave probably would've been my second choice, and I still would've had to buy a separate marlinspike tool since the Wave doesn't have one.

One clear advantage over many Leatherman multi-tools is that SOG uses hex-head or allen-head screws to hold the tool accessories in place. This means that if you have more than one SOG tool, you can usually make modifications by removing the screws and swapping out tools, or by buying individual multi-tool components on SOG's website, as I mentioned above. Note, however, that you CANNOT buy the sheepsfoot blade with the 50/50 straight/serrated edge or the proper marlinspike. Those appear to be entirely exclusive to the Performance Sailing Multi-Tool sold through W.M.
