Power Systems Kettlebell (20-Pounds) Review

First off, I'm using these for crossfit. I think crossfit athletes should have a 35lb, 55lb, and 70lb kettlebell set (the men at least). That roughly translates to one pood, 1.5 pood, and two pood kettlebells (again, roughly, one pood is just over 36 pounds).

I ordered the 55lb KB first, and it arrived in a box that was thrashed - which should be expected. All they need is to get the label on something so it can be delivered, these particular KBs aren't going to get damaged in transit, trust me.

The KB is not coated, its just raw black'ish steel. I don't understand why people are complaining about narrow handles... anything wider and it wouldn't be a kettlebell, it would be a shopping cart handle with a hunk of weight attached. In fact, I've seen KBs with more narrow handles, which are fairly undesireable for two handed exercises, like sumo deadlift high pulls and kettlebell swings.

I also ordered the 70lb KB after receiving the 55lb KB. For the price, I couldn't be happier, these things appear to be indestructable.

This was not the first product like this that I had tried, but this was the most expensive - I had tested the cheaper options first. The theory behind this is great, unfortunately, it just didn't work for me. It actually wound up pulling my foot to the side, causing me to put more weight on the inner side of my foot. Unfortunately, in order to determine whether this performed as I needed it to, I had to try it out. Once that was done, and I determined that it did NOT provide the lift I was hoping for (to address foot drop), it was no longer "new" and could not be returned. I was using this for jogging, so it is possible that with shoes other than sneakers, larger foot sizes, or purposes other than jogging, would not be problematic. Please note also that if you are borderline between the "medium" and the "large", opt for the large. I technically fell within the range of the medium, and originally ordered that from another company. Iit was too small. I returned it, but could not get a replacement with a different size, as that company had discontinued carrying it.

Shimano Spirex Spinning Reel (6/200, 8/140, 10/120, 6.2:1, 5 BB) Review

I've been using Shimano spinning reels for over 20 years.
I have (and regularly use) 5 Spirex reels, one 4000, one 2500, and three 2000's.
I get a bit 'riled up' when people claim the Quick-Fire (QF) feature loses fish for them. I just don't believe it is so. And once you get used to it, using a reel without it feels like you're handicapped. Like you're fishing with one hand tied behind your back. Drives me crazy. I ended up 'gifting' a NICE reel away because using it drove me crazy without the QF.

For someone who doesn't fish much, or is a beginner, the QF is a great choice because it's easier to become proficient at casting a spinning rig with QF. The line release is simply easier to get the hang of.

Before I go on, let me just say that this review doesn't deal with the overall quality of the Shimano Spirex. You can see that in all the other reviews. I agree it's 5 stars on quality for the price.

This review deals pretty much only with the QF feature, due to the number of people who moan about it for (IMHO) wrong reasons.

The older QF reels had a problem with the trigger. After a couple thousand casts, the trigger would wear out a little and wouldn't lift the bail properly. I haven't had that problem in any of the reels I've bought in the last 5 years. I have well over 2K casts on all of my Spirex reels now except the one I bought last year, which is close I'm sure.

That leaves the "big problem": the lack of 'instant' or 'infinite' anti-reverse. Some people mis-state the issue: they say Spirex doesn't have anti-reverse, but it does have a toggle to switch between having anti-reverse, or allowing 'back reeling'. It doesn't have *instant* anti-reverse though, because you have to be able to move the trigger back to the top of the reel.

I honestly don't believe that that this 'lack' has EVER lost me a fish. But the majority of my fishing is NOT cast-retrieve, it is jigging for walleyes. I keep my line between my finger and the trigger when I'm not reeling. It adds sensitivity. This ALSO holds the bail in position where there *is* 'instant' anti-reverse! The bail CAN'T 'reverse' because it's already all the way back! Also, when I AM casting spoons or plugs, if I stop reeling I have the habit of back-reeling to the stop, so again, I *do* have instant anti-reverse. The only time I don't is when the fish hits WHILE I am reeling. And if he hits strong enough to REVERSE my reeling motion and move the bail back to the stop, it's HIGHLY doubtful that giving 3" of line and delaying the hook set for a half second will be the root cause of a miss.

IMHO, there are 2 types of people who complain about the lack of instant anti-reverse:
1. The purist. Is it *POSSIBLE* that a clack-back on a hook-set could cause you to lose the fish? Yes. And that answer is enough to clinch it for them. They don't want to hear that the odds are 500 to one. They don't want to hear how handy and easy the QF is. How you can nearly eliminate the issue with experience. It's not as perfect as it could be, and that's the end of the story for them. And that's OK. I'll concede that argument to them. Fishing is a mind game. Most of these guys never used a QF reel, so they don't miss it when they don't have it anyway!
2. The false-association. People notice the clack-back. It's a strange noise. It's a little distracting. And every time they miss a fish, they realize they missed it just a SECOND after they hear the clack-back, so it's human nature (an instinctive survival trait) to associate the one with the other. When they CATCH the fish, they're too busy to remember the clack-back noise. Since fishing is very much a 'mind' and 'attitude' game, once they have that negative association, no one can convince them it isn't so, with all the physics and math in the world.

Bottom Line: If you *THINK* that instant anti-reverse is going to lose less fish for you, then I HIGHLY recommend you buy a reel that has it. You NEED a positive attitude to be a successful fisherman (at least all the successful fishermen *I* know have one).

But if you're interested in an excellent reel that will HELP you to cast better faster, that allows one handed casting same as a bait caster, that you can train yourself to fish WITHOUT clack-back anyway, then this is the reel for you!
