I had been using bulkier knee pads to try and avoid damaging my knees, only to find after a season they were not working out well for me. I felt like my crossovers were being inhibited by the other pads, so I went on a search for a lower profile knee pad that offered good protection. Of the pads available, these are the ones I found with the most positive reviews. I am reviewing these as a roller derby skater (used indoors).

Pros:
-low profile (not bulky, not particularly "fat," close to your knee = low profile) with excellent protection. My crossovers feel more natural and my mobility feels improved as I am not having to make extra effort to get around a bulky pad. As for protection, I gave these a test run with four point falls after I smashed my patella into my leg with my old pads and it was like magic.
-open back design, so you can put them on after your skates or take them off easily without removing your skates (with my old pads, there was a lot of cussing as I pulled the slide-off pad over my wounded knee... I feel if you manage to injure yourself and are wearing these, the design will allow less painful and much faster access to your leg, but I have been falling with no injury, so... knock on wood!).
-the open back has flaps with pull tabs, then a strap (one on top and bottom) that wrap around, so they feel very secure and the tightness can be adjusted quickly.
-plastic cap is well mounted and is easy to center on your knee standing or sitting. Seems very durable and you cannot feel it when you fall, so the construction itself does not add to the wear we already put on our knees.

Cons:
-the sizing is a bit hard to estimate, but there are worse things.
