With non-barefoot-style shoes, I was never able to run for more than a minute (interval) at a time, (even if I trained religiously for a whole year) because of shin splints. If I pushed myself any more than that, the shin splints got so bad, I couldn't lift my feet. One person once asked (in jest, because she knew about this) if I was doing my cool-down already.
