Taylor Made Products Replacement Dock Wheel (12") Review

I have had several pairs of the 18" wheels for over 8 years and while they do a good job of protecting the boat from dock rash they aren't made very well. In 8 years I have had to replace mine 4 times!

The most annoying problem is that the valves are el-cheapo pin type valves similar (only a cheaper version) of the ones used in basketballs and volleyballs. If the valve was at least as good a quality as those used in sports balls at least they wouldn't leak. The valves universally leak unless you use a lubricant like dielectric grease or petroleum jelly and finesse them when you add air. Most of the time the valve just leaks - even on new wheels and a flat dock wheel is a useless dock wheel.

The next issue is the material that they are made from simply does not hold up in the sun AT ALL! There is no UV resistance. If the wheel is exposed to the sun you will get 1-3 years of useful life at most before it disintegrates into a gooey mess and eventually doesn't hold air at all. Of course once they start to turn into a gooey mess they imprint all of that sticky goo on the side of your boat when it comes in contact. If I could post a picture of mine here you would see what I am talking about. Of course, the warranty for the wheels is 3 years. They know - that's about as long as they will last.

Finally, the hardware - the main bracket is hot dipped galvanized steel and has lasted over 8 years without rusting however, for some silly reason, they provide a plain steel nut and washer to hold the wheel to the roller bracket. These parts turn to rust in a matter of months and when they fail the wheel is free to run up and off the top of the bracket which can result in substantial damage to the side of your boat. I know that a stainless steel lock nut and washers would be a trivial amount of additional cost to an already expensive product.

I just find it frustrating that for such a useful product that they haven't made en effort to improve the materials when I'm certain they know how poorly they last.
