Product Description
The People's Republic of Fremont' is one of Seattle's funkiest neighborhoods, and the Fremonster is one of our funkiest bgs! With bold prints and distinct lines, this pannier looks as good off the bike as it works on it. Throw it over your shoulder or snug it on your rear rack. Just like the citizens of Fremont, this bag stands out in a crowd.Detours Fremonster Flap Pannier (Grey) Review
I bought this pannier with the intent on replacing my TImbuk2 messenger bag (I was tired of aching shoulders and sweaty backs). It has its advantages and disadvantages, but overall I'm happy with the purchase. I use it to carry books and papers between school and home.Pros:
- It looks like a normal shoulder bag
- The expansion ability nearly doubles the capacity!
- The attachment mechanism is pretty nifty; it doesn't require a bottom hook. However, I am slightly concerned as to the long-term durability of the clasps (though I have not had any problems yet)
- There is a very convenient outer pocket for lights/phones/wallets, etc. You won't have to dig through the depths of your bag for common-access items. This pocket is not covered in expanded mode, but it doesn't appear to be an issue in terms of things falling out
- A conveniently placed compartment on the bottom of the bag stores a fluorescent yellow rain cover for bad weather
Cons:
- The only thing securing the flap in the non-expanded mode is a magnet; velcro would have made much more sense, as the magnet is not enough to keep the flap down while biking
- There's only one mesh organizational pocket; more would be nice, as well as pockets for commonly used pencils/pens
- One major disadvantage of a pannier in general is that storage is depth oriented rather than width oriented; this means that putting stuff in the bag is, in certain situations, more difficult than a messenger bag
- My most minor complaint is that the shoulder pad is a little anemic, and the strap design places the plastic adjustment loop right over my shoulder; this usually isn't too bothersome, but a more substantial pad would have been nice
Overall opinion:
This is a great pannier at a very good price. I was very conflicted between this and the Detour Hill model, but I opted for this one due to its expandability. With a little MacGuyver talent, you can figure out ways to keep the flap closed (or ignore it completely) and the other issues aren't enough of a hassle to write an angry letter about.
